Dental Implant Glossary Down Syndrome Trisomy 21 is a genetic disorder that was traditionally known as Mongolism.  These                          people have characteristic looks with slanted eyes, short fat fingers, and short stature.  Some degree                          of mental retardation is present.  The dental implications of Down Syndrome are a proclivity toward                          periodontal (gum and bone) disease that usually requires frequent attention as patients enter their                          twenties, missing and smaller teeth, and enlarged tongues that make cleaning more difficult.   These                          people are generally excellent and lovable patients.
